The message is clear from South China coach Ricardo Rambo ahead of his side’s must-win AFC Cup fixture against Mohun Bagan: Winning is his only focus.

The Hong Kong outfit currently sit in second on the Group G standings and need to beat table-topping Mohun Bagan to ensure their progression to the last 16. A draw or a loss could see them surpassed by Yangon United or Maziya Sports & Recreation who do battle in Wednesday’s second Group G fixture.

There is some comfort to be taken from the knowledge that their destiny is squarely in their own hands, a situation that appeared unlikely after they began their campaign with three defeats. However, back-to-back home wins over Maziya and Yangon United have vaulted them back into contention. Their task is a difficult one, though; Mohun Bagan are unbeaten in this year’s competition, and claimed a 4-0 victory when the two teams met in March.

Rambo has insisted that his troops are not thinking about past results or on what other teams may do, but rather just on beating the opponent in front of them.

“Obviously, Mohun Bagan defeated us 4-0 and they are a great team and we have to do much better this time around but the boys are motivated and I am sure we can do well and win the encounter,” he said.

“We are looking to win since a win will confirm our participation in the next round and we don’t have to depend on the results of the other teams in the fray.

“I only worry about my own team and not the opponents. So if we play well it really doesn’t matter the players they play with.”

The match is live on FOX Sports 2 from 10:50 HKT.
